What do you do in the summer when you live in the Portuguese Algarve and daytime highs typically reach the low 30s (high 80s F.)? One thing you might consider is heading north, with obvious destinations being Scandinavia, Scotland and Ireland.
When Bina and I considered this issue in July 2024, we opted for Ireland, since we’d never been there before and could fly directly on Ryanair from Faro to Dublin. Yes, Ireland is famous for its rain — they don’t call it the Emerald Isle for nothing — and summer is the peak (read: crowded) season. Still, the forecast looked okay for our planned 12 days and, what the heck, tourist congestion was a problem all over Europe that summer.
We arrived in the Irish capital on July 24.
