People look at us quizzically when we tell them we visited Luxembourg in 2023: “Why Luxembourg?”
What comes to mind when you think of Luxembourg? Probably not much, other than, “oh, there’s a lot of business done there, right?” True, Luxembourg is a hub for international business and finance. But we thought the country worth a closer look — and yes, Luxembourg is actually a country, although smaller than Rhode Island, the smallest U.S. state.
For a start, this was an easy trip for us, a direct, a three-hour direct flight on Ryanair from our local airport in Faro, Portugal. We had never been there before, so there was also a novelty factor.
Building on that, Luxembourg lies in the heart of Europe, bordering Germany, France and Belgium. It acquired culinary and cultural attributes from all three — as well as a predictably difficult history (lots of armies crossing its borders). The country offers both historical sites in Luxembourg City and natural beauty in the Ardennes Forest region north of the capital.
So, off we went, on July 29, for a look-see.
