Morocco 2022

Morocco has always had a hold on the western imagination that you don’t see associated with neighboring North African countries, such as Algeria and Tunisia. Familiar examples would be Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman romancing in Casablanca, Bob Hope and Bing Crosby romping through Road to Morocco and “Marrakesh Express,” the Crosby, Stills and Nash hit. One way or another, Morocco is seen as a fun place to visit. 

Bina and I decided to test that out in the spring of 2022. One, I had a birthday coming up, and two, we wanted to venture a bit outside our comfort zone of Europe without going a great distance. Morocco is located very close to our home country of Portugal — just across the Gibraltar straits — and we could take Ryanair from nearby Seville, Spain, straight to Marrakech, a four-and-a-half hour flight.

To be sure, the different culture (Muslim) and language (Arabic and Berber, although French is widely spoken) made traveling within Morocco more challenging than Europe. So, we decided to work with an agency to help plan our itinerary and provide us with guides and a driver. By May 14, we were on our way, “travelling the (plane) through clear Moroccan skies …”
