Once in awhile, Bina and I get a hankering to journey farther afield than Europe. Traveling on this continent is generally convenient and comfortable for us, since we’re based in the Portuguese Algarve. Yet, occasionally, we look for something more adventurous and challenging; in 2022, that was Morocco and Tanzania.
Two years later, we set our sights on Thailand. Southeast Asia being virgin territory for us, this would bring a range of new experiences in terms of culture and food. The Algarve still being a bit chilly in February 2024, we also yearned for warmer weather, as in tropical. We pulled this trip together in a little over two weeks, with lots of advice from friends who had previously been there.
In the course of our research for the trip, we noticed that Cambodia’s Siem Reap, the location of Angkor Wat, could be reached in an hour-long flight from Bangkok, so we added that to the itinerary. By March 6, we were on our way to the airport in Lisbon for a two-day flight on Emirates: Lisbon to Dubai, Dubai to Bangkok.
