Croatia had been on our “must visit” list for a long time. The fall of 2024 seemed like a good time to go there so we booked ourselves a trip to the Illyrian coast to cover parts of Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro and (very briefly) Bosnia.
What’s an “Illyrian coast”? The word “Illyria” has, since Roman times, been used to cover the Balkans’ western Adriatic coast and parts inland. You could also use the term “Dalmatian coast,” but that would apply more strictly to just the Croatian coastline from Zadar to Kotor (which is now in Montenegro). It gets complicated, like the region itself.
We set aside two weeks for this trip to incorporate three full days in Slovenia, six in Croatia and four in Montenegro. Since we made this journey at the end of September/beginning of October, we resigned ourselves to episodes of cool, rainy weather, which did materialze. But at least we avoided the crazy summer crowds of July and August.
On September 22, we flew easyJet from Faro, Portugal, to London Gatwick, and then easyJet again to Ljubljana, Slovenia. On the way home, on October 6, we took easyJet from Tivat, Montenegro, to Manchester in the UK, and then Jet2 back to Faro.
