Vienna/Salzburg 2023

For Bina and me, one of the advantages of living in Portugal’s southern Algarve region is the international airport located in Faro. With the help of discount airlines such as Ryanair, easyJet and Transavia, we can fly direct to major cities all over Europe for a reasonable fare.

For this particular week-long trip, we decided on Vienna, Austria. Both Bina and I had been to Vienna before, separately, but that was back in the 1970s — 46 years ago, for me. So, a return visit was definitely in order. Music provided part of the attraction for us, since the former imperial capital on the Danube had loomed large in the careers of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Strauss. We also knew Vienna’s art collections to be among the world’s finest.

Thinking about it some more, it seemed fitting to add a few days in Salzburg, at the western end of the country, both the birthplace of Mozart and setting for one of the world’s most popular films, The Sound of Music. To prep for the trip, we even watched the movie for the first time in about two decades.

On September 8, we drove to the airport in Faro for the three-and-a-half hour flight to Vienna ready to immerse ourselves in music and art.
